Ministry is NOT a Marathon

runner

What I am about to tell you may shock you...but I was the fastest guy in my High School. 4 knee surgeries ago! I was what they call a “fast twitch” guy. If you remember from Health class, fast twitch runners do better over short distances. Slow Twitch runners do better over long distances. As a fast-twitch guy, I could beat almost anybody in a 40 yd Dash.  Just don’t ask me to run a 5K, or God forbid a marathon! Long distance running is just not natural!

What I love about pastors, is that we all run fast! It’s a good thing because we’re always running, right? We’re always in a season.  We just finished ONE Holiday season; but another one’s coming, right? Mother’s & Father’s Day is coming. A few weeks later comes the Fall Kick-Off again; then the Holidays will be here again before you know it! Tired yet?! You and I are always running in ministry.

But what if I told you that not everyone who runs in ministry wins? That’s what the apostle Paul said:

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.”  1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NIV)

It’s not enough to run in ministry. We have to run to win.  Here’s the challenge with ministry:

Ministry is not a 40 yd dash or even a marathon. It’s an Iron Man Ultramarathon!

We simply can’t keep running an unsustainable pace. We can’t get too high or too low based on one win or loss. We must be in this thing for the long haul. We must stay sane, centered, and married. We must TRAIN to win: spiritually, emotionally, relationally, and physically!

How do we sustain or regain the strength we need to finish the race? We keep our eyes on the prize. We keep our eyes on the finish line. We look to author AND perfecter of our faith. Greater is He that is in us than He that is in the world. We can do all things through Christ WHO STRENGTHENS us. We might not have this, but He does. Surrender and Submit again to Him today. Enjoy the journey. Enjoy the race. Run your race, not someone else’s race at someone else's pace. If you will, you are guaranteed to win the prize!
