I have always sought to surround myself with mentors and people who could offer good counsel in my life. I almost NEVER make any decision without talking it through with several people. I have friends and mentors both inside and outside our church that have saved my neck numerous times, offered great feedback, critiques, and wisdom over the years. Some of my counsel givers OUTSIDE our church, just this past year, have included: Millionaires; CEO's; Lawyers; Friends who do what I do; National Ministry Leaders, Pastors from other churches; and Sr Pastors of various church sizes, including some with over 20,000 people!
I ALSO seek counsel OFTEN from people INSIDE our church! I meet with our Pastors every week for at least two hours, and these days these meetings are filled with more strategic discussions about how to set the kind of culture God wants us to set here at our church, and lead His church in to the future! I have a Finance Team that I meet with every eight weeks that offer feedback and counsel on virtually EVERY financial and personnel decision we make; I also have an Advisory Team made up of successful business men in our church, who also happen to love Jesus. I talk through LOTS of things rattling around in my head and heart that I want to talk through with a few safe people in my church. These groups provide a great ministry to me and our church!
Suffice to say, I am surrounded by TONS of counsel. Why so much counsel? Years ago, when I read the following statement, I took God at His Word:
"Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety" Proverbs 11:14 (NKJV).
Who do YOU seek counsel from these days?
Do you have a multitude of counselors?
I do; and it has made all the difference in the world.
