As of the time of the writing of this book, I have now been formally coaching leaders for over fifteen years. For many of those years I did so while starting and growing a megachurch. However, a few years ago, I began to realize that my desires and passions had begun to shift. My passions and desires were changing. I couldn’t ignore this any longer. At first I thought this might be due to something I ate, but the longer I prayed and processed, I realized that God was somehow tapping me on the shoulder about something. I began to process a potential leap from being a pastor of a megachurch and part time coach, to launching a national coaching organization. The crazy thing is that I had no major reason to leave my post! I had it made. I could easily stay where I was and retire comfortably, but something (actually Someone) would not allow me to do it! God was at work in my life, I just didn’t know how.
As I processed my future through with a few trusted mentors and coaches in my life, I sat in a Mexican restaurant in Atlanta, with one of them, Sam Chand, when he made this statement to me, “Change is hard because we often overestimate what we have and underestimate what we might gain by giving that up.”
“Change is hard because we often overestimate what we have and underestimate what we might gain by giving that up.”
You may think I’m crazy, but I made my decision sitting at that table to take a leap of faith. The following year I would announce my transition to my church, resign from my post as a Senior Pastor, and become the Founder and CEO of a national fast growing, coaching organization. It has become one of the best decisions I have ever made. Don’t get me wrong. The transition was not easy. The process was difficult. Change is hard! I did, however, underestimate how much fun life could become by taking a new leap of faith. The fruit has been immeasurable, and I have never looked back. These days I am having the time of my life, and I feel more fulfilled and successful than ever before! I am living in my sweet spot, facilitating leadership growth and organizational health for leaders all across our nation and even world! God is using CourageToLead.com in ways I could not have even imagined when I was sitting back in that Mexican restaurant.
