I believe there are at least seven values the best team members bring to the table. I refer to them as indispensable because to be a great team member, I don’t think you can live without them. I refer to these seven values as “The Code,’ that governs how a team member works and relates with others on the team and within the organization. When I am considering hiring someone, I mentally work through this list and ask myself whether I think the candidate possesses these indispensable values. When I am interviewing a candidate, I often highlight these indispensable values I look for in a team member. Here are the seven indispensable values of a great team member:
Is this team member willing to be be brutally honest with me? Is this team member willing to say TO me, what they’re willing to say ABOUT me to others. Will this team member offer honest feedback when I ask for it. Does this team member have integrity? Are they trustworthy? Can I really trust them?
Does this team member show up to work with passion each day? light up the room when they walk in the door? Is this person intrinsically motivated or do they wait around for me alone to inspire them? Does this person smile a lot and do they bring laughter to the halls? Is this job a “Get to...’ or a “Got to..” for them?
Does this team member care more about their own little red wagon or are they more concerned with collective results? Are they more competitive or collaborative? Does this team member play
well with others? Do they have high emotional intelligence? Are they willing to pitch in and help, whether it falls within their job description or not?
Does this person DWTSTWD (Do What They Say They Will Do)? Does this person hit the deadlines they have established and committed to? Do they return their calls and emails? Is this person usually on time? Are they as good as their word?
Does this person whine about what they can’t do and don’t have or do they simply focus on doing the best they have with what they have been given? Does this team member do the very best they can with what they have been entrusted with? Does this person have a track record of working within the budget? Are they a good financial manager?
Is this team member willing to pay the price? Is this person willing to make a sacrifice to be here? Will this team member go the extra mile or always be looking to do the least to get by? Does this team member go above and beyond duty? Does this team member often exceed expectations? Do I have to pull this team member back and send them home or do I have to constantly kick them in the seat of the pants ? Is this person willing to DWIT (Do Whatever It Takes)?
Does this team member have my back? Is this team member willing to support me publicly even when they have disagreed with a decision I have made? Can I count on this person to speak well
of me behind my back? Is this person willing to overlook my own faults and see the best in me and believe in me? Is this team member willing to stick by me even when it turns difficult?
