Leading ourselves to the next level all starts in our mind. We are transformed by the renewing of our minds. Yet one of the most undisciplined parts of our your body is probably our mind. We simply don’t filter well enough what we think about and dwell on. If change is necessary in our lives, however, it will always start with our mind. Let me ask you a simple, profound question:
What do you think about?
Do you see problems or possibilities?
Are you a pessimist... or a realist (which is really just a pessimist in denial)?
Do you see everything that’s wrong?
Do you think and speak positively about those you work with?
Do you doubt yourself and your abilities?
Do you wonder if you have what it takes to lead this to the next level?
How much do you smile? Do you still laugh?
Are you enjoying life or getting through it?
Are you initiating...or just responding?
One thing is for sure. Changing the way we answer any of these questions begins in our minds. You probably know this but the word “repent” literally means to “change our minds!” So how, right? Below I have listed some steps and practices that can help us begin to lead ourselves to the next level by changing the way we think.
1. Begin with gratitude.
It is almost impossible to be miserable and thankful. Begin each day by thinking over yesterday and listing at least two things for which you are thankful. Begin your daily time alone with the Lord THANKING him for His provision and blessing over yesterday.
2. Pray specifically.
Take your specific points of anxiety and tension to God. Pray for specific situations and conversations. Pray for specific matters.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Phil 4:6-7 NKJV
3. If it’s not beneficial, don’t dwell on it or discourse about it.
It might be true, but if it’s not excellent or praiseworthy just don’t give lip to it! Our lips give legs to our thoughts. If it’s not beneficial to the situation or the person, shut up in the name of Jesus!
“Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” Phil 4:8 NLT
Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles.” Prov 21:23 NKJV
4. Don't hope for it. Believe in it and decide for it.
It’s called faith. If we want to see God do cool stuff in our future, we must believe and not doubt. We can’t doubt God. We can’t doubt what God can do through us. We must believe that the mountain can and will move!
“Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them’”. Mk 11:23 NIV
