Conflict is inevitable.
In fact, healthy conflict is encouraged.
You’ve’ got to create an environment in which team members feel free to express their opinions and ideas (without fear of punishment) in order to—
Get complete buy-in (most people don’t care if you don’t use their suggestion as long as they feel like they were, at least, completely heard)
Arrive at the best conclusion (you’ve got to be able to let things go “said” which often go “unsaid” so that you can continue to keep the air clear and the team connected)
Here’s how we handle it— we don’t say anything ABOUT someone which we won’t say TO someone.
It’s not Biblical (Matthew 18:18-20).
It’s not beneficial.
And…
Public loyalty breeds private leverage
In the Killer Teams book, we note that the third pillar of a "killer team" is accountability. That involves saying the hard things.
Hold each other to the vision— and to the action-steps required to meet it— or you’ll lose credibility.
Note: this isn’t just a “top-down” metric. It also works downhill.
